Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 4-6 links Bratwurst Raw or smoked bratwurst
  • 2-3 cups Sauerkraut Jar or bag
  • 1 large Onion Sliced
  • 1-1.5 pounds Potatoes Cubed or sliced (optional but filling)
  • 2 cloves Garlic Minced (optional)
  • 1/3 cup Broth, beer, or apple juice For simmering
  • Butter or oil For browning
  • Black pepper To taste
  • Caraway seeds A pinch, if you like that classic sauerkraut flavor
  • Mustard For serving

Method

Cooking Instructions
  1. Brown the bratwurst in a hot skillet with a little oil or butter until browned on all sides.
  2. Remove the bratwurst from the skillet and add sliced onions, allowing them to soften and pick up the browned bits.
  3. Add cubed or sliced potatoes and let them get golden before adding any liquids.
  4. Add sauerkraut and a splash of broth, beer, or apple juice, mixing to prevent scorching.
  5. Nestle the bratwurst back into the skillet, cover, and let simmer until hot.

Notes

For added flavor, stir in a spoonful of Dijon mustard into the sauerkraut while it simmers. Let it rest for a few minutes before serving.
