Ingredients

Dough Ingredients
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour Essential for a sturdy yet flaky dough
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt Enhances the flavors
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil Keeps the crust tender
  • 1/2 cup warm water Helps to create a pliable dough
Filling Ingredients
  • 6 cups apples, peeled and sliced Use a mix of sweet and tart varieties for depth of flavor
  • 1/2 cup sugar Balances the tartness of the apples
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon Adds warmth and a classic flavor
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg For a hint of earthiness
  • 1/2 cup raisins or chopped walnuts Optional for added texture
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice Prevents browning and adds freshness
  • Butter for brushing Creates a beautiful golden finish

Method

Preparation
  1. In a large bowl, combine the flour and salt. Create a well in the center and add the oil and warm water. Mix until a shaggy dough forms.
  2. Knead gently for about 5-7 minutes until smooth. Cover with a damp cloth and let it rest for at least 30 minutes.
Preheat the Oven
  1. While the dough rests, preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
Prepare the Filling
  1. In a bowl, combine the sliced apples, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, raisins or walnuts (if using), and lemon juice. Toss until the apples are well coated.
Roll Out the Dough
  1. On a clean, floured surface, roll out the dough as thinly as possible, ideally stretching it out with your hands for an even thinner base. The dough should be translucent in places.
Assemble the Strudel
  1. Brush the rolled-out dough with melted butter. Spread the apple filling evenly over the surface, leaving a small border around the edges.
  2. Carefully roll the dough, starting from one of the short sides, to form a log. Seal the edges by pinching them to prevent any filling from leaking out.
Transfer to Baking Sheet and Bake
  1. Place the rolled strudel seam-side down on the prepared baking sheet. Brush the top with melted butter for a crispy, golden crust.
  2. Bake in the preheated oven for 30-40 minutes until golden brown. Check for doneness by looking for a crisp, deep color on the exterior.
Cool and Serve
  1. Let it cool for a few minutes before slicing. Serve warm with a dusting of powdered sugar or a scoop of vanilla ice cream on the side.

Notes

Tips for the best results: Let the dough rest adequately and use a mix of apples for enhanced flavor. Roll the dough thin for optimal texture.
